Facts About Rukn-e-Yamani in The Light of Quran and Hadith

Visiting the House of Allah (SWT) is such a wonderful gift, and only the blessed ones can have the prospect. Muslims all over the world desire to visit this Holy site once as it refreshes their faith. Muslims are aware of its significance in Islam as both the obligatory and non-obligatory acts which mean Hajj & Umrah are performed here throughout the year. It has longer sanctity and antiquity. Allah (SWT) chose Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) to build His House, and now where millions of Muslims visit and worship Allah Almighty. While performing Umrah and Hajj, the first practice Muslims undertake after Niyat and Ihram is the circumambulation of the Holy Ka’bah. This House is also known as Baitullah Shareef is the source of blessing and asking forgiveness for all. Holy Ka’bah is constructed in square shape and has four corners and each corner has its own importance. There are two most important points at Khana Ka’bah, the first one is Hajr-e-Aswad and the second one is Rukn al Yamani. Further, we will discuss about Rukn al Yamani in detail.

What is Rukn al Yamani and Where it is Located?

Rukn al Yamani is the corner of Holy Ka’bah located on the southwestern side of the Ka’bah on the right side of Hajr-e-Aswad which means that black stone is on the eastern corner. Its name lies in the fact that it faces Yemen. Rukn al-Yamani, like Hajr al-Aswad, has the potential to absolve sins, in line with the belief of the Prophet (P.B.U.H). To touch the corner Yamani while performing Tawaf is the Sunnah. Moreover, this corner is not covered with Kiswa for Muslims so they can touch and kiss. It is also known as Yemeni Corner and Rukn Al-Janubi.

Istilaam of the Rukn al Yamani

Since this corner currently stands on the foundation that Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S.) built, the narration of Abdullah bin Abbas (R.A.) says that the Prophet (S.A.W.) made 'Istilaam' of it. Istilaam pertains to the touching of the corner, either through hand or by kissing. Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) had himself touch Rukn al Yamani by his hand that’s why it is considered Sunnah. Although there is no disadvantage if pilgrims are unable to reach it because of the crowd.

Recite Dua between Rukn al Yamani and Hajr-e-Aswad

As a tradition, whenever Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) passed between the Hajr-e-Aswad and Rukn al Yamani he used to recite the following Dua mentioned in the Holy Quran.

"Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." (Surah Al Baqarah, verse 201)

A special type of Concrete

Rukn al-Yamani, there is a rift in the Holy Ka’bah that is difficult to fix. Several rulers attempted multiple ways to seal the crack but were unable to do it, so they started pouring a special form of concrete, molten metal to prevent it from disintegrating. However, this method has been replicated again and again in order to preserve the present status of Rukn al Yamani.

Hadith and Sunnah about Rukn al-Yamani

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Ubaid bin Umair that a man said:

"O Abu Abdur-Rahman, why do I only see you touching these two corners (Black Stone and Yamani Corner)?" He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Touching them erases sins.' And I heard him say: 'whoever circumambulates seven times, it is like freeing a slave.'" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2919)

In another Hadith, Ibn 'Umar (Allah be pleased with them) reported:

I have not abandoned touching of Yamani corners (and kissing of) the Stone since I saw Allah's messenger () touching them both in hardship and ease. (Sahih Muslim 1268 a)

Moreover, Ibn ‘Umar (Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Apostle of Allah() did not give up touching the Yamani corner and the (Black) Stone in each of his circumambulations. Ibn ‘Umar used to do so. (Sunan Abi Dawud 1876)

From the above-discussed details, the significance of Rukn al Yamani is evident. Muslims should visit Mecca to fulfill their duty of performing Holy rituals. You are permitted to touch and kiss Yamani corner when you visit the place, people also used to pray Nafl Namaz in front of this corner. As it is also a source of removal of sins of a person.
